DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Recreation Assistant Part-Time – Community Centers to join its Recreation and Wellness team.

The potential candidate will play a key role in the following duties:

  • Coordinate and monitor recreational activities at community centers, playgrounds and related facilities.
  • Instruct or assist with a wide range of programming and free play for community youth.
  • May resolve problems and counsel participants; assist with center preparation for programs and activities and assist with facility and cleaning.
  • Must be a positive role model for youth, promoting non-violent actions.
  • May be responsible for opening and closing facilities.
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required.

There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or a GED.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) months of related experience in recreation or education are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
May require a valid driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES

Applicants with a valid Texas Driver’s License will be highly preferred.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. The salary range is:
